Memorial University: Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Ocean Biogeochemistry

The Department of Ocean Sciences of Memorial University ( http://www.mun.ca/osc/) invites applications for a tenure track Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Ocean Biogeochemistry. The focus of the Chair will align with the mandate of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. The ideal candidate should have a strong interdisciplinary background in some combination of biological or chemical oceanography, marine ecology, water column biogeosciences, climate studies and modelling, have a Ph.D, with relevant post doctoral experience and a demonstrated record of, or show the potential for success in obtaining external grant funding.

The Department of Ocean Sciences, which is located 12 km north of the University's main campus in St. John's, is recognized internationally for the quality and productivity of research programs in marine biology and ecology, aquaculture, marine animal physiology, biochemistry and genomics, and chemical, biological, and fisheries oceanography. The mandate of the Department is to carry out high-quality research focused on organisms and processes in cold oceans, deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in ocean sciences, and supervise/mentor honors and graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) and post-doctoral fellows. At present, the Department of Ocean Sciences has a core faculty of 15, a staff of over 40, and over 60 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. The Department has excellent research facilities including the newly constructed Cold-Ocean Deep-Sea Research Facility (CDRF; http://www.mun.ca/osc/CDRF/index.php), which houses a large level B/III containment laboratory and specialized research equipment including tissue culture facilities, an Aria III flow cytometer/cell sorter, a confocal microscope with resonance scanning capabilities, and a benchtop scanning electron microscope. There is also a large suite of sophisticated elemental and chromatographic analytical instrumentation within the Department and on the main campus (http://www.mun.ca/research/resources/creait/).

Ocean research is one of the focal areas identified in Memorial's Strategic Plan and excellent opportunities for collaborative research exist within the University as well as with researchers working in the province, nationally and internationally. The successful Tier 2 Canada Research Chair holder will be encouraged to catalyze interactions and foster links between the Department of Ocean Sciences and the other departments on campus including Earth Sciences, Physics and Physical Oceanography, Biology, and Chemistry as well as with researchers at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).

Memorial University is the largest university in Atlantic Canada. As the province's only university, Memorial plays an integral role in the educational and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador. Offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs to over 18,000 students, Memorial provides a distinctive and stimulating environment for learning in St. John's, a safe, friendly city with great historic charm, a vibrant cultural life, and easy access to a wide range of outdoor activities (http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/PlacesToGo/StJohns).

Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars, i.e., candidates must have less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.), may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process. Applicants are encouraged to consult the Canada Research Chairs website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria ( http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.aspx). Please note that the individual selected will be subject to review and final approval by the Chairs Secretariat ( http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/nomination-mise_en_candidature-eng.aspx#s9). If approved as a Chair holder, the appointment will be made at the the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This is subject to final budgetary approval by the University.

The deadline for receipt of applications is December 18th, 2015. Applicants should send a statement of research and teaching interests, a resume, and the names and addresses (including email) of three referees to
