The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Inorganic Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Chemistry by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.  We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement the existing strengths of our department (see: https://www.chemistry.utoronto.ca). We encourage applicants to review our research and teaching activities prior to applying. The successful candidate will be capable of inorganic chemistry and general chemistry instruction in classroom/laboratory environments and online. Applicant expertise and teaching-related scholarly interests may include, but are not limited to, inorganic synthesis/characterization, transition metal chemistry, catalysis, main group chemistry, lanthanide/actinide chemistry, and bioinorganic chemistry. Familiarity with computational chemistry techniques would be an asset. The successful candidate will join a dynamic community engaged in chemistry pedagogic scholarship within a research intensive university environment. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level, including lecture and laboratory preparation/delivery, curriculum development, and mentorship of undergraduate students. A demonstrated keen interest in developing novel approaches to engaging undergraduates of all academic backgrounds is required. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to exemplary pedagogical practices and teaching‐related scholarly activities.

The successful candidate will be required to deliver lectures and associated laboratories in inorganic chemistry and other undergraduate general chemistry and upper year courses, depending on curricular needs and their area of specialization. They are also expected to supervise undergraduate research projects and develop new teaching laboratory experiments along with graduate student teaching fellows. A knowledge of health and safety of chemists working and learning in the laboratory is essential.  The candidate will additionally engage in pedagogical advancement, and lead positive change in our educational programs that represent the evolving needs for chemistry, science, and technology in society in Canada and around the world. It is expected that such creative educational development activities will be communicated to the broader teaching community (nationally and internationally) through conference presentations and publications.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry may be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences as documented on the CV; strong letters of endorsement from referees of high standing; and a teaching dossier to include a strong teaching statement, sample course syllabi and course materials (especially those related to the teaching of inorganic chemistry), and undergraduate teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application. Evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities may include experience as a teaching assistant, experience in curriculum development, sample syllabi, awards, teaching grants secured, presentations at conferences, participation in delivering successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or publications and/or presentations related to pedagogical innovation. Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
