University of Manitoba: Instructor I (organic chemistry)

The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full-time probationary position at the rank of Instructor I, commencing September 1, 2024, or on a mutually agreed upon date. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Department seeks an emerging scholar with a commitment to excellence in teaching and pedagogical development in Organic Chemistry. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated expertise in Organic Chemistry (e.g. relevant teaching experience, Ph.D., publications in organic chemistry). Duties include undergraduate teaching, including live lecture, lab-based instruction, and service-related activities. Additional duties may include pedagogical, course and lab development. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a track record of outstanding teaching contributions, curriculum development, and work in a collaborative environment with diverse students.

The Department currently has 21 full time tenured and tenure track faculty members and 10 Instructors and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The Department has well-established and equipped teaching and research facilities such as microwave reactors, X-ray diffractometers, NMR spectrometers, thermogravimetric analysis, electrochemical equipment, IR spectroscopy, gas-chromatography mass spectrometers and high performance liquid chromatography instruments among others, and is supported by strong links with other University of Manitoba departments including Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, Biological Sciences and Civil Engineering. Dr. Terri Lovell hired by the University of Ottawa [@LovellTerri]

Dr. Terri Lovell earned her BSc from Memorial University of Newfoundland and MSc in polymer science at the University of Oregon (UO). She worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific (legacy Molecular Probes) and became fascinated by fluorescent probes. She pursued a PhD with Prof. Jasti at UO; focusing on using nanohoops as new fluorescent scaffolds, finetuning their photophysical properties, and exploring their biological applications. She obtained an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship and chose a postdoctoral position at McGill University with Prof. Gonzalo Cosa, working on improving fluorophores for single-molecule fluorescence microscopy. Dr. Lovell accepted an Assistant Professor position at the University of Ottawa, which she will begin in July 2024.

University of Waterloo: Definite Term Lecturer position in Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a full-time Definite Term Lecturer position in Biochemistry. The successful candidate will normally teach five courses over three terms per year in introductory biochemistry and related advanced topics. In addition to teaching, they will have a substantial role in advising undergraduate students and in further developing the Biochemistry undergraduate program, which is a joint program of the departments of Chemistry and Biology. This appointment will be made for an initial three-year term. This position fills an important role in the program, however, and it is anticipated that an appointee with outstanding performance will be considered for a permanent appointment as a Continuing Lecturer during a second three-year term.

Applicants should have outstanding training and demonstrated excellence in biochemistry. A doctoral degree in biochemistry or a closely related discipline is required; postdoctoral experience is desired. Applicants should have established an outstanding biochemistry teaching record or be able to provide evidence of potential for high-quality teaching in biochemistry at all levels within the undergraduate curriculum. Experience in implementing evidence-based pedagogical practices in a university setting will be considered an asset.

The University of Waterloo is located in the vibrant and friendly two-university Region of Waterloo (population 550,000) in southwestern Ontario, approximately 100 km from Toronto. The anticipated salary range for the Definite Term Lecturer is $85,000 to $100,000 per year. The start date for this position is November 1, 2024.
