The Department of Chemistry at St. Francis Xavier University invites applications for a probationary tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Biochemistry to begin July 1, 2026. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Applicants will be evaluated on their potential to contribute to the development of a biochemistry concentration offered for BSc Major and Honours chemistry degrees at StFX. Candidates should have a PhD in Biochemistry or a related discipline from a recognized university as well as have expertise to teach introductory and upper-year biochemistry courses and have evidence of excellence in teaching and of a well-defined program of research and potential for its development, within the context of a primarily undergraduate institution.

Some of the responsibilities of the successful candidate include:

  • Establish a vibrant, externally-funded research program in the field of biochemistry (broadly defined) which incorporates undergraduate (B.Sc.) trainees and may involve graduate (M.Sc.) trainees
  • Teach a variety of undergraduate-level biochemistry courses
  • Supervise B.Sc. honours students engaged in independent research
  • Contribute to curriculum development
  • Membership on committees and other general service to the university

Crandall University: Tenure-track teaching

Academic Rank: A full-time tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant Professor.

Salary: Based on education and experience as per the Crandall University Faculty Handbook. (Approximate range $66,900 - $88,260). Includes a generous benefit and retirement package.

Qualifications: PhD (Chemistry) or MSc (Chemistry) with PhD in chemistry-associated field


Particulars of the Position: The science program is seeking a chemist passionate for teaching and

mentoring. Joining a small biology faculty team, the successful candidate will teach first-year chemistry and second-year organic chemistry lectures and labs primarily in support of an established biology major. As per the candidate’s expertise, additional courses may include chemistry courses for pre-med or environmental science students interested in completing a minor in chemistry, such as environmental chemistry, toxicology, analytical chemistry, etc. The ability to teach first-year physics is advantageous but not necessary. Strong lab and management skills will be necessary for tasks surrounding chemical ordering and inventorying, safety, equipment maintenance, lab revisions to keep experiments current, and more. The successful candidate will ensure that the chemistry component remains a science program strength.


Teaching Load: Six semester courses per year or equivalent.


Other Duties:  Research and publication is required for promotion. In addition, faculty

members are expected to be involved within their respective discipline’s professional organizations or agencies.

Faculty are expected to be involved in service to the university including serving as academic advisors to a group of students, and functioning on at least one university committee. A service role toward their local church and community is expected according to their gifts and interests.
