University of Manitoba: Head of the Department of Chemistry

The University of Manitoba is seeking an innovative and energetic individual to serve as Head of the Department of Chemistry for a five year term commencing July 2015 or as soon thereafter as possible. Successful candidates must be eligible for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor. The Head is expected to promote research and teaching in the Department through the encouragement of researchers, the development of graduate and undergraduate programs, and the continuation of a personal internationally recognized program of research in an area of chemistry or biochemistry. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in chemistry or biochemistry, an outstanding reputation as a researcher, mentor and teacher, a record of strong external funding, a collegial and inclusive leadership style, and a clear vision for the future of the Department. The University of Manitoba has a student population of almost 30,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional program students and is the most research intensive university in the province. The Faculty of Science is the largest undergraduate faculty at the University of Manitoba, with over 4,400 students, and offers comprehensive education in all areas of science. The Department of Chemistry consists of 25 faculty members (including 6 instructors) and 12 support staff covering the traditional and applied areas of chemistry and biochemistry. There are currently one Tier 1 and one Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs as well as a Manitoba Health Research Council Chair. The Department is well equipped with a comprehensive suite of instrumentation for the support of research, and is a key partner in the Manitoba Institute for Materials, which is currently undergoing an $8 million expansion. The Department and its researchers have strong ties across the University, including the Faculty of Health Sciences, and with the National Microbiology Laboratory. The undergraduate programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry, including a co-op program, are accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry, and currently include over 160 majors. In addition, the Department is home to over 60 graduate students and 15 postdoctoral fellows and research associates.
