UBC - Okanagan: Biochemistry and Green Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry in the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences , at the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia, invites applications for two tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor, one in Biochemistry and one in Green Chemistry. Each appointment is expected to start on July 1, 2018, or soon thereafter.

A doctoral degree and post-doctoral or equivalent experience in the relevant field (biochemistry or synthetic chemistry, respectively) is required. While each appointment will be held in the Department of Chemistry, there will be opportunities for intra- and inter-Faculty research collaborations. The successful candidate will, thus, be an excellent interdisciplinary scholar who has demonstrated strong research productivity and will be expected to establish an independent, rigorous, innovative, high-impact, externally-funded research program that complements existing strengths within the Department and in other disciplines in the Faculty and across campus. 

For the Biochemistry position, qualified candidates with expertise in experimental areas related to structural biology, membrane biophysics, and protein and nucleic acid biochemistry are particularly encouraged to apply. For the Green Chemistry position, qualified candidates with research interests in catalysts relevant to green synthesis of molecules or polymers (including earth-abundant transition metals, biocatalysts, photoredox catalysts, and/or organocatalysis) are particularly encouraged to apply. 

The appointee will have demonstrated experience as, or capacity to be, an excellent teacher and mentor of undergraduate and graduate students, and will be expected to teach existing courses in the Department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to curriculum development and course delivery specific to their area of expertise, and to undertake service responsibilities at the Departmental, Faculty, University, and professional levels, as appropriate.

(ii) a curriculum vitae;
(iii) a one-page statement of research interests and a five-page (maximum) research proposal. The proposal must be original; articulate a long-term vision that demonstrates impact, in terms of groundbreaking advances in the field and/or on society; outline short-term objectives; and define the methodologies to be employed;
(iv) a two-page (maximum) statement on teaching philosophy, interests, and plans for research mentoring of students and other highly qualified personnel;
(v) evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., teaching/course evaluations); and
