Ryan MacDonnell Hired by Dalhousie University

Congratulations to Ryan MacDonnell, who has been hired by Dalhousie University as an assistant professor in theoretical chemistry, starting January 2023.

Ryan earned his BSc from Carleton University in 2014 before moving up the Rideau canal to the University of Ottawa, where he did his PhD with Dr. Michael Schuurman at the National Research Council of Canada. His PhD research focused on simulating and quantifying the effects of functional group substituents on the photochemical dynamics of conjugated polyenes, with the idea of controlling the dynamics and outcomes of reactions on femtosecond timescales. After successfully defending his PhD in early 2020, he moved to Sydney, Australia, and started work as a postdoctoral research associate with A/Prof. Ivan Kassal at the University of Sydney. There, he has been developing the first techniques using analog quantum computers to simulate chemical dynamics and spectroscopy.

After a few years down under and one wild wallaby sighting (so far), Ryan will be returning to his home province of Nova Scotia to work at Dalhousie University. His research will involve developing new theoretical techniques to characterize and simulate photochemical reactions using classical and quantum computers.
