McMaster University: Chemistry & Chemical Biology - Contractually Limited Assistant Professor (Chemical Education)

Position Description:
The Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology at McMaster University is seeking candidates to fill a one-year contractually limited, teaching-focused faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Chemical Education. The preferred start date for the appointment is August 1, 2023.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Biology at the time of appointment and should have a demonstrated a record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level. Duties include teaching a range of courses, including general (first year) chemistry, chemical biology laboratory and other courses (possibly in Polymer Chemistry), as well as administrative service. Participation in curriculum development and/or undergraduate laboratory supervision may also be required. There is no expectation that the candidate will develop an independent laboratory research program, but interest in pedagogical research and student supervision is encouraged.

A complete application consists of:

  • a cover letter (including a statement regarding whether the applicant has Canadian citizenship / permanent resident status (see below))
  • a current Curriculum Vitae including relevant publications
  • a statement of teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching effectiveness
  • a statement of experience and plans for advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in post-secondary education, community-based or other professional settings (2-page maximum)
  • the names and full contact information of at least three referees. Letters of reference are not required and will not be reviewed at the application stage; the Department will request letters of recommendation from referees at later stages of the search process.

Review of complete applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. All applicants will receive an on-line, system-generated confirmation of receipt of their application; however, only short-listed applicants will be contacted for interviews.

Vaccination Policy Statement:
The University is committed to providing and maintaining healthy and safe working and learning environments for all employees, students, volunteers and visitors. The University’s Vaccination Policy-COVID-19 Requirements for Employees and Students (the “Vaccination Policy”), requires all McMaster community members, including employees, accessing a McMaster campus or facility in person to be fully vaccinated or to have received an exemption from the University for a valid human rights ground. While the Vaccination Policy is currently paused, it may resume quickly and on short notice, as informed by public health advice and direction. Should it become necessary in future to resume the Policy, all community members will need to demonstrate compliance at that time. Successful applicants in those positions that work in host hospitals or other healthcare sites that have active vaccination mandates in place will need to comply with these and any other health and safety measures necessary as part of their appointment. The University will continue to follow the guidance of public health organizations to define fully vaccinated status.
