The Department of Chemistry at The University of Western Ontario (http://www.uwo.ca/chem) is pleased to announce a search for a Canada Research Chair Tier I in Interfacial and Applied Surface Science to be appointed to a tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The rank will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience.
In accordance with the regulations set for Tier I Canada Research Chairs (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca), the successful candidate will be an outstanding and innovative researcher. The candidate must have a Ph.D. and a demonstrated record of accomplishments; be recognized internationally as a leader in interfacial and surface science, as evidenced by recognition in influential publications in top tier international journals, and active membership on advisory boards and international panels and/or editorship on major journals. Demonstrated success in attracting external funding (in particular through large, multidisciplinary team-based projects) and an established record as a keynote presenter at national and international conferences are essential. The successful candidate should also have a superior record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and providing leadership in research, and interdisciplinary scholarship.
At Western, the successful chair holder is expected to provide leadership, collegiality and strategic vision through collaboration with existing Chemistry faculty members and to build links between the departments within the Faculty of Science and in other Faculties. The candidate must carry out innovative research of the highest quality that will attract excellent trainees and is expected to work on problems of industrial relevance and in commercialization. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the teaching mission and to develop graduate and undergraduate programs in the Department of Chemistry. Interfacial and surface science is an important area of materials science where Western has a well-established national and international reputation and a long and illustrious history. The Faculty of Science has extensive research and capabilities in this area, including Surface Science Western (http://www.uwo.ca/sci), the Nanofabrication Facility (http://uwo.ca/fab/), the Zaplab (http://uwo.ca/earth/zaplab/) and Tandetron (http://www.isw.physics.uwo.ca). In addition, the Faculty of Science and the Department of Chemistry have exceptional expertise in synchrotron-based research, with extensive connections to synchrotron facilities in the country and around the world.
Candidates should submit an application form, curriculum vitae, one-page teaching statement, two-page statement listing experience or interest in professional and/or leadership programs, a concise research proposal (five pages, NSERC Discovery Grant format preferred), and contact details of at least three professionals who can provide letters of support to:
