The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications to the Department of Chemistry for consideration for a tenure track position in Materials Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level, to commence on July 1, 2016. The position will be cross-appointed with the School of Sustainable Design Engineering. The applicants should hold a PhD degree in chemistry, materials science and engineering, or a closely related field; and have relevant postdoctoral and/or industrial experience. Teaching experience would be a strong asset. While the position is at the Assistant level, applicants at a higher level (Associate and Full Professor) will also be considered.

The Department of Chemistry and the School of Sustainable Design Engineering are committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in inorganic chemistry, as well as introductory chemistry; and courses in the field of  materials science and engineering. It is expected that the successful faculty member will develop a vigorous research program that will attract external funding. He/she is also expected to initiate and develop strong research collaborations between the Department of Chemistry and the School of Sustainable Design Engineering as well as with industry partners.

The Department of Chemistry at UPEI has a strong commitment to teaching and research, and UPEI's School of Sustainable Design Engineering focuses on a design-based student learning experience that is hands on, team-focused, project-oriented, and industry-linked.

UPEI is well equipped with modern instrumentation including a 300 MHz FT-NMR, a powder X-ray diffractometer, elemental analyzer, TGA, DSC, DMA, high resolution TEM/SEM, and GCMS.

UPEI also maintains close ties to the Duffy Research Centre, which allows access to a wide range of research instrumentation including 600 MHz NMR and High Resolution Mass Spectrometers. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Complete applications will consist of a curriculum vitae, a research proposal (NSERC format) and a statement of the applicant’s teaching philosophy and experience. The teaching statement should also outline any past experience with undergraduate laboratory development, experiential and hands-on learning, and mentoring students in a project-based environment. Applicants must also arrange for letters from three referees to be sent directly to the address below.
