Carleton University: Three faculty positions (Molecules & Materials for Sustainability; Human and Ecosystem Health; Food Safety, Security, and Analytical Methods)

The Department of Chemistry at Carleton University is seeking outstanding new investigators for three preliminary full-time tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of assistant professor beginning July 1, 2021.

Qualified applicants are expected to have an exceptional record of demonstrated success in chemistry or a related field that complements existing departmental strengths and fits within one of the following broadly defined themes of Departmental focus:

  • Molecules and materials for sustainability
  • Human and ecosystem health
  • Food safety, security, and analytical methods

Researchers taking interdisciplinary, collaborative, and community-oriented approaches are especially encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will be expected to develop sustained, externally funded research programs and establish productive collaborations within the Department and beyond. Applicants must be able to teach core undergraduate chemistry courses and successful candidates will be expected to develop graduate and undergraduate courses in their areas of specialization.

Equity, diversity and inclusion are among Carleton and the Department of Chemistry’s core principles and are essential in cultivating imagination, discovery, and understanding. Candidates are sought who value diversity and whose research, teaching, and service demonstrate a commitment to these principles. Applications of candidates from groups underrepresented in chemistry and/or with experience in mentoring students from such groups are especially encouraged.

About the Academic Unit:

The Department of Chemistry, housed within the Faculty of Science, offers high-quality teaching and comprehensive research programs. We provide a holistic experiential chemistry education with distinctive programming in food science, nanoscience, and toxicology. The Department is home to excellent spaces, equipment and facilities, and to scholars who conduct research that responds to societal needs, provides tools for solving problems, serves as evidence for policy, and offers the highest quality training for our students. Our faculty collaborate widely within the University and take advantage of and contribute to the breadth of research taking place across campus. We also benefit from our location in Ottawa, which enables and facilitates partnerships with industry and government. As a Department, we value welcoming and forward-thinking teaching, global-minded research, a community-minded approach, and a mutually respectful workplace. We aim to create and maintain positive environments for our faculty, staff and students and to make an impact on our communities. The successful candidates must show proven ability or significant potential to develop an independent research program and will be expected to maintain their research programs by obtaining external competitive grants (e.g. Tri-council funding). The successful applicants will demonstrate excellent teaching and communication skills.

As part of an interdisciplinary department, the successful candidates’ research interests are expected to dovetail with that of the existing Faculty. Applicants with the ability to forge collaborations with members of the Department and other faculty across the University, as well as with allied agencies, will be given preference.
