Royal Military College: Nuclear Science or Nuclear Engineering

SLOWPOKE-2 Nuclear Reactor Manager and Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Nuclear Science or Nuclear Engineering

The Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCE) Department at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) wishes to hire an indeterminate (equivalent to tenure-track) faculty member, preferably at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with expertise in nuclear science and/or nuclear engineering. The successful candidate would become the Technical Authority and Manager of the SLOWPOKE-2 Reactor within two years of appointment. The successful candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Health Physics, Engineering Physics, or a related discipline at the time of hiring. The preferred start date is 1 July 2023.

Further, the candidate is asked to describe their experience in nuclear research including their vision statement and dedication to promote and manage the SLOWPOKE-2 Reactor. The candidate’s commitment to research should be demonstrated by a solid record of peer-reviewed scientific contributions.  If applicable, the candidates are asked to describe their management experience in a scientific facility or in industry. A professional engineering license in Canada, or the eligibility to obtain a license, is an asset.

The successful candidate should show initiative in the development of an independent research program that can capitalize on the resources of the CCE Department. Utilization of the SLOWPOKE-2 Reactor in their research program would be an asset. Additionally, a research program in collaboration with CCE Departmental Faculty, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), Department of National Defence (DND), industrial contacts, and/or other external contacts would be an asset.

The successful candidate is expected to teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels within the CCE Department.  An undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a related discipline would be an asset. Teaching experience at the university-level is an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to make contributions through service to the CCE Department, the Faculty, the University, and the broader community. Conditions of employment will require the successful candidate: (1) to obtain a reliability security clearance status; (2) to become a licensed SLOWPOKE-2 reactor operator (within two years of appointment); and (3) to be trained and to assume the technical authority and managerial duties of the SLOWPOKE-2 Nuclear Reactor Facility (within two years of appointment).

  • Research portfolio that includes: their proposed research objectives, a 5 to 10-year research program plan, undergraduate/graduate student supervision plan (maximum five pages);
  • Teaching portfolio that includes: a description of teaching objectives and/or training experience, and other relevant information (maximum five pages);
  • If applicable, university-level teaching evaluations;
  • Up to three examples of peer-reviewed scientific contributions;
  • Proof of university degrees;
  • Proof of citizenship;
  • If applicable, proof of Canadian military service; and
  • Full contact information of three persons who could provide a professional reference.
