McMaster University: The Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in Environment and Health

McMaster University invites applications for the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in Environment and Health. Applicants with interests related to the intersection between freshwater, the environment and health are particularly encouraged to apply. The Chair will have an internationally distinguished research and teaching record commensurate with a tenured appointment at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level.  The Chair will be based in the Faculty of Science and, depending on his or her scholarly background and interests will be appointed to the Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology, the School of Geography & Earth Sciences or the new School of Interdisciplinary Science, with the opportunity for cross-appointment between these units.  Associate membership in other units and faculties is also possible.

The Chair holder is expected to play a leadership role in interdisciplinary research and education in the area of Environment and Health. The successful candidate is expected to attract substantial research support, to be very active in the recruitment and training of graduate students and PDFs, and work to build greater research capacity and strength in the area of Environment and Health at McMaster University.  Substantial funding will be provided to the Chair to initiate and invest in fresh water research initiatives across campus. In addition, there are special opportunities for the successful candidate to work in the area of environment and health in relation to freshwater.  In particular, the Chair may profit from associations with:  the Professor in Water Policy, McMaster Water Network, Biointerfaces Institute, Institute for Infectious Diseases Institute, and Water Without Borders graduate program, a collaborative graduate program in water, environment and health between McMaster University and the United Nations University-International Network on Water, Environment and Health.  Other opportunities stem from the close proximity of the Canada Centre for Inland Waters and the Royal Botanical Gardens.

McMaster University is ranked in the top 100 of both the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. A medium-sized university, it nonetheless has the sixth-largest research income in Canada. It has a large, attractive campus, the interior of which is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, and is at the western end of Lake Ontario.
