The Department of Chemistry and Physics is currently seeking applications for a Laboratory (Lab) Instructor in Chemistry commencing 1 July 2021.

The Description

Applicants should possess at least an MSc in Inorganic Chemistry or Organic Chemistry as well as relevant experience teaching in the laboratory at the university level. Experience teaching online would be a valuable asset. The successful candidate will manage and instruct laboratory exercises associated with courses in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and other subjects, and should have a record of creative and effective student engagement. As lab instructors work cooperatively with lecturers, teaching assistants and technicians, the successful candidate must be collegial and have excellent interpersonal skills.

Workload includes cooperating with the Chair of Chemistry/Physics and the incumbent lab instructor in the assignment of teaching duties, performing the administrative duties required by these assignments, planning (with lecturers) the content of lab exercises, maintaining and updating lab manuals, hiring and supervising teaching assistants, working with technicians to ensure that appropriate resources are available for exercises, maintaining safety standards in the lab and field and educating students about these standards, instructing lab sessions, guiding and assessing student work, consulting with students, and working with lecturers to determine the final course grades. According to the Collective Agreement with the Mount Saint Vincent University Faculty Association, the normal full-time teaching workload for a Lab Instructor is six three-hour lab periods per week in each of the fall and winter terms. Laboratory exercises may be scheduled for mornings, afternoons and/or evenings. Lab Instructors will provide collegial service to the department and the university and maintain professional and research currency. The successful candidate may be asked to provide help for the operation and routine maintenance of the department’s newly installed 400 MHz NMR spectrometer.
