University of Ottawa: Tier 2 - Biomaterials

The University of Ottawa invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Biomaterials. Candidates are sought whose interests are at the interface of chemistry or physics and biology, and who propose to develop (or are already actively engaged in) a research program in biomaterials.  The successful candidate will have access to the world-class core facilities in NMR, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography in the Faculty, materials characterization and biocatalysis facilities that are part of the Centre for Catalysis Research and Innovation, and core facilities in Biology and Medicine. According to Maclean’s 2013 University Rankings, the University of Ottawa ranks #2 in Canada in research intensity in natural and health sciences.  The Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Ottawa is currently ranked #2 in Canada and is one of the top 75 Departments worldwide (according to ARWU) and currently hosts two winners of the Herzberg Canada Gold Medal, eight Canada Research Chairs and five University Research Chairs.

Title of the position: Assistant professor level, but higher ranks will be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities revealed by research or professional work; c) academic service activities, d) supervision of graduate students.

Terms: Tenure-track position

Rank and salary: Regular academic tenure-track appointment in the Faculty of Science, with a salary consistent with the collective agreement of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa.
Require qualifications and Work experience: Ph.D. or equivalent in Chemistry or Physics and postdoctoral experience is mandatory. A demonstrated excellent research track record in biomaterials research.  A commitment to teaching and graduate training, a strong track record in and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, excellent communication skills in either English or French.  Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure.  English-French bilingualism is an asset.

Tier 2 CRCs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. Chair-holders are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.  For more information on the CRC program visit the CRC website.
