University of British Columbia - Okanagan: Materials Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry (http://chem.ok.ubc.ca/welcome.html) in the Irving K Barber School of Arts and Sciences (IKBSAS), at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Materials Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment is expected to start on July 1, 2019, or soon thereafter.

A doctoral degree and postdoctoral or equivalent experience in fields related to materials chemistry is required. We seek applications from candidates with expertise in experimental areas related to synthetic chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials, and/or nanochemistry. The successful candidate will have a strong research program rooted in the synthesis or development of new materials with a vision of applying these materials in transformative technologies, particularly in biological/health applications. The research program will show promise of fundamental developments in their field. We wish to recruit an individual whose research is synergistic with other research programs in the Department, in particular existing strengths in single-molecule biophysics, microscopy, chemical neurobiology, glycobiochemistry, mechanistic enzymology, and chemical synthesis. Therefore, the appointee must be an excellent interdisciplinary scholar who has demonstrated strong research productivity and will be expected to establish an independent, rigorous, innovative, high-impact, externally-funded research program.

The appointee will have demonstrated experience as, or capacity to be, an excellent teacher and mentor of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as ability to teach existing courses in the Department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to curriculum development and course delivery specific to area of expertise and to undertake service responsibilities at the Departmental, Faculty, University, and professional levels, as appropriate. They are also expected to show evidence of commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful, collegial, and conducive learning and working environment.

• a one-page statement of research interests that includes a description of how the research complements existing Departmental strengths;
• a five-page (maximum) research proposal. The proposal must be original; articulate a long-term vision that demonstrates impact, in terms of groundbreaking advances in the field and/or on society; outline short-term objectives; define the methodologies to be employed;
• a two-page (maximum) statement on teaching philosophy, interests, and plans for research mentoring of students and other highly qualified personnel;
• evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., teaching/course evaluations); and
• the names and contact information of three referees who may be contacted to submit letters of reference.
