The Department of Chemistry at Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor with a preferred start date of July 1, 2023, in the area of Experimental Physical Chemistry.


The Department of Chemistry offers a nationally accredited Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree program in Chemistry (Major and Honours). Undergraduate students are actively involved in faculty research and graduate students are enrolled in the MSc or PhD in Applied Science Program. Faculty members in the Department have access to advanced instrumentation, including a 300 MHz NMR, various mass spectrometers (including a QTOF HRMS), SEM/EDX, DSC, FT-IR, single crystal X-ray diffractometer, various spectrophotometers, and potentiostats.

Job Information and Responsibilities

The successful Assistant Professor will develop and maintain an innovative, externally funded research program in their field. Responsibilities will include:

Teaching and curriculum development in both undergraduate classroom and lab environments, primarily in the areas of physical chemistry, and first year chemistry.

The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in the administrative life of the Department of Chemistry, the Faculty of Science, and the University in general.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Assistant Professor you will have:

Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry (or a closely related field) and will normally have postdoctoral or industrial experience.

Strong record of research and a plan to establish an independent, externally funded research program.

A commitment to excellence in teaching.

A plan to contribute positively to the service of the university.

  • Cover letter (including a clear statement of status as a Canadian citizen or permanent resident)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Concise research proposal (NSERC Discovery Grant format, 5 pages for proposal + 2 pages for references, including a section on HQP training and EDI considerations)
  • Teaching dossier including a statement on teaching philosophy, details on experiences training HQP, and evidence of teaching effectiveness.
  • Names and contact information for three individuals able to act as academic referees.
  • Optional: Candidates may also include a statement detailing career interruptions or other special circumstances relevant to their applications (maximum one page).
