University of British Columbia - Okanagan: Materials Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry (http://chem.ok.ubc.ca/welcome.html) in the Irving K Barber School of Arts and Sciences (IKBSAS), at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Materials Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment is expected to start on July 1, 2019, or soon thereafter.

A doctoral degree and postdoctoral or equivalent experience in fields related to materials chemistry is required. We seek applications from candidates with expertise in experimental areas related to synthetic chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials, and/or nanochemistry. The successful candidate will have a strong research program rooted in the synthesis or development of new materials with a vision of applying these materials in transformative technologies, particularly in biological/health applications. The research program will show promise of fundamental developments in their field. We wish to recruit an individual whose research is synergistic with other research programs in the Department, in particular existing strengths in single-molecule biophysics, microscopy, chemical neurobiology, glycobiochemistry, mechanistic enzymology, and chemical synthesis. Therefore, the appointee must be an excellent interdisciplinary scholar who has demonstrated strong research productivity and will be expected to establish an independent, rigorous, innovative, high-impact, externally-funded research program.

The appointee will have demonstrated experience as, or capacity to be, an excellent teacher and mentor of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as ability to teach existing courses in the Department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to curriculum development and course delivery specific to area of expertise and to undertake service responsibilities at the Departmental, Faculty, University, and professional levels, as appropriate. Memorial University: Analytical Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry, Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2019, subject to budgetary approval. The successful applicant will be required to develop an internationally recognized, externally funded research program in the broad area of analytical chemistry. McMaster University: Radiochemistry and/or Radiopharmaceutical Sciences

University of Victoria: Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technologies Tier II CRC

The Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technologies (CAMTEC) at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2 in “Advanced Functional Materials”. The successful applicant will be nominated by the university for a CRC Tier 2 and upon approval by the CRC Secretariat, will then be offered a tenured or tenure-track appointment at the appropriate rank. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferably, the position will involve a formal cross-appointment between one Department from the Faculty of Engineering (either Civil, Electrical and Computer, or Mechanical Engineering) and one Department from the Faculty of Science (either Chemistry, or Physics and Astronomy).  Teaching duties will be assigned in one of these Departments.

CAMTEC is the main hub for materials research at the University of Victoria. The Centre consists of a multidisciplinary team of more than 25 faculty members, including 7 Canada Research Chairs and one Canada 150 Chair, and 120 academic researchers (students, postdocs, technical personnel). CAMTEC  houses open-access infrastructure worth over $20M, distributed in four shared laboratory facilities (https://www.uvic.ca/research/centres/camtec/facilities/index.php). The shared facilities include infrastructure for nanofabrication and device implementation, a clean room, a biosample manipulation lab and a selection of state-of-the-art characterization and imaging equipment, including one of the world’s most advanced electron microscopes, and equipment for optical imaging and spectroscopy. CAMTEC members normally engage in multidisciplinary collaborative projects involving national and international academics, industrial partners, governmental agencies and non-profit organizations.

In accordance with the regulations for the Canada Research Chairs (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.aspx) program, Tier 2 chairs nominees must be within 10 years of receiving their highest degree when they are nominated to the Chair (expected nomination by April 2019). However, applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Requirements

The successful candidate will be an emerging world-class scholar who has demonstrated research productivity and potential to achieve international recognition within the next 5-10 years.  The appointee will be expected to establish an independent, creative and high-impact research program based on external research funding. The research program should allow for collaboration and be complementary to the activities in material science that are taking place at CAMTEC (https://www.uvic.ca/research/centres/camtec/research/index.php) and elsewhere at the University of Victoria.  The proposed research program should have the potential for national and international multi-disciplinary collaborations, including industrial partnerships. It is anticipated that the appointee will develop as an outstanding teacher and mentor of diverse undergraduate and graduate students and have the potential to manage a healthy lab environment that integrates diverse employees. A PhD degree in a materials-related area is required.

University of Waterloo: Computational Biochemistry/Chemistry

S/he will have demonstrated excellence in areas related to biochemistry, medicinal chemistry and computational chemistry, ranging from computational studies and fundamental properties of biologically important molecules and polymers to novel applications of modern computational tools and methods to areas of biochemistry and medicinal chemistry. A PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or an equivalent discipline, as well as postdoctoral experience, is required.  Creative scientists with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching and service are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a strong independent research group, including supervision and mentoring of graduate students, and be able to develop collaborations with researchers in the Department of Chemistry and other departments and research centres at Waterloo, and internationally. Our interdisciplinary and collaborative department includes 44 faculty, and active, innovative programs shared with other departments in the Faculties of Science, Mathematics, Applied Health Sciences and Engineering, as well as other universities around the world. The successful candidate will also have a record of outstanding teaching, or will be able to provide evidence of potential to develop and deliver advanced courses in modelling, computational and simulation methods, introductory courses in the chemistry and biochemistry programs.

McMaster University: Molecular Medicine

The Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology (CCB) at McMaster University invites applications to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of molecular medicine, effective July 1, 2019.  Scientists whose research interests focus on the molecular basis of disease and therapy are encouraged to apply. The successful application will be expected to mount a research program targeted toward the fundamental understanding of disease and/or the development of modern therapeutic methods.   The research program should create a presence in any one of a number of critically important areas, such as the chemistry of mental health disorders, addiction, aging, and the fundamental chemistry behind gene editing, amongst others. The role of chemistry and chemical biology in understanding and treating health-related disorders is a clear area of growing importance, and CCB will provide a vibrant environment to foster a new research program in this area, with opportunities for both internal and external collaborations.

Our aim is to recruit a candidate who will establish an internationally competitive research program and forge numerous research interactions and collaborations with colleagues in the Faculty of Health Sciences.  Integration between Faculty of Science & Faculty of Health Sciences will be a key objective of this new position. The successful candidate will take advantage of numerous opportunities to attract research funding for personnel and infrastructure, including grant programs from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and disease-specific associations/foundations.

The research program of the selected candidate will be located in a newly-renovated laboratory space, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018.  This space will include state-of-the-art open-concept laboratories designed for chemical biology/synthetic chemistry/biochemical engineering.  The candidate will benefit from the surrounding suites of shared infrastructure (Confocal microscopes, Raman spectrometers, BSL-2 labs, etc.).  In addition to having access to the equipment and facilities in this new space, the successful candidate will also have access to instrumentation in the CCB Core Facilities (Magnetic Resonance, Mass Spectrometry, and X-ray Diffraction), the Canadian Center for Electron Microscopy, the Biointerfaces Institute, and the Centre for Probe Development and Commercialization (CPDC).

Applicants should clearly demonstrate potential to develop a prominent, externally funded research program and a commitment to excellence in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.   Candidates must have a doctoral degree in chemistry, chemical biology or a closely related field, relevant postdoctoral experience, and a promising record of research scholarship and productivity.  A complete application package must include a cover letter, a detailed curriculum vitae, a one-page statement of teaching philosophy anddetailed descriptions of at least three research projects that exemplify the proposed research program, as well as a one-page statement on equity and diversity.  Optionally, applicants may also include a one-to-two page summary highlighting their top three publications and specifying the signficance and novelty of these contributions, as well as a list of the major instrumentation and equipment necessary to pursue each project.  Academic reference letters are not required at the time of application, but applicants must provide the names of three referees who may be subsequently contacted.

Michael Freund hired by Dalhousie University
