University of Calgary: Canada Research Chair (Tier II), Quantum Chemistry on Quantum Computers

Position Description

The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier II position in Quantum Chemistry on Quantum Computers. The successful candidate will be appointed as an Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with Tenure), and nominated for a CRC Tier II position, in the Department of Chemistry. This position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022 or later.

The successful candidate can join the Faculty of Science's Institute for Quantum Science and Technology, which comprises 17 faculty members and their research groups, and the Institute is a member of the Quantum Alberta consortium, which is a community of quantum scientists, technologists and engineers working in the Province of Alberta.

Tier II candidates: must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, computer science or related area; be an excellent emerging researcher in using quantum computing for quantum chemistry; have a background in quantum chemistry with an interest in quantum computing or who has background in quantum computing but with an interest in chemistry applications; a proven record of research excellence commensurate with the applicant's stage of career development and a demonstrated record or potential to establish an outstanding, externally funded research program are required. Interdisciplinarity is an asset and industrial partnerships are also encouraged.

Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank requires a strong publication record demonstrating excellence in quantum computing for quantum chemistry. Prior success in obtaining peer-reviewed funding is an asset. Candidates should also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning and the use of contemporary approaches to teaching.

Appointment at the Associate Professor rank requires a strong record of publications in high-quality journals associated with quantum computing or quantum chemistry, as well as evidence of securing ongoing external research funding. They must also have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the University level that utilizes contemporary approaches to teaching, and evidence of graduate student supervision.

Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program's Tier II justification process. University of Alberta: Physical Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta seeks applicants for the Manley and Mirian Johnston Professorship in Chemistry. This is a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Organic Chemistry with preference given to applicants having a research focus in physical organic chemistry. Exceptionally qualified applicants at the Associate Professor level will also be considered. The position has a starting date of July 1, 2022.

Enthusiastic teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels is expected, with preference for teaching of core courses within current graduate and undergraduate Organic Chemistry curriculum. Supervisory and teaching potential will be documented via the candidate’s teaching dossier (if applicable); a statement of teaching philosophy; and their letters of reference.

The successful candidate must indicate how they will work to expand the equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) of the Department through a statement describing their plans to incorporate EDI into their teaching, research, mentorship, and service to the scientific and University community. Within their EDI statement, applicants are encouraged to describe how they increase diversity and representation within the Department of Chemistry.

University of Calgary: Biophysical Chemistry

 The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Full-time Tenure-track Faculty Position in the area of Biophysical Chemistry, with a start date of July 1, 2022 or later. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or in exceptional cases as an Associate Professor.

Qualifications:
Qualified applicants are expected to conduct research on biophysical chemistry of biologically relevant macromolecules. Applicants will use and build on the existing analytical, biophysical and computational infrastructure within the University of Calgary and Canada wide computing networks. In addition, the establishment of novel experimental approaches is encouraged to complement the existing biophysical instrumentation in the Biophysics core facility and the Calgary Center for Metabolomics Research in the Department of Biological Sciences (NMR, MS, ITC, DSC, SPR, Fluorescence, CD).

The applicant is expected to establish a vibrant and internationally recognized, externally funded research program in the broadly defined area of biophysics using experimental and/or computational approaches, as well as provide excellent, innovative education for undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will assist in meeting the institutional goals outlined in the recently developed ¿Framework for Growth¿ and in the strategic plan of the Faculty of Science. The ¿Framework for Growth" is centered around three big ideas that will differentiate our entrepreneurial university and drive growth: transdisciplinary scholarship, deeper community partnerships, and future-focused delivery of programs that will see us expand the flexibility and customizability of the UCalgary experience. University of Waterloo: Analytical Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo invites applications from outstanding scholars and researchers for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in any area of analytical chemistry with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022. In exceptional cases, an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor will be considered.

Creative scientists with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching and service are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have outstanding training and demonstrated excellence in chemistry or a closely related discipline. A PhD in Chemistry or an equivalent discipline, as well as postdoctoral experience, is required.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a strong independent research group, including supervision and mentoring of graduate students, and be able to develop collaborations with researchers in the Department of Chemistry and other departments and research centers at Waterloo, and internationally. Our interdisciplinary and collaborative department includes 42 faculty, and active, innovative programs shared with other departments in the Faculties of Science, Mathematics, Health and Engineering, as well as other universities around the world. Our faculty are key members of interdisciplinary research centers such as the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology, the Water Institute, the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change, and the Centre for Bioengineering & Biotechnology.

The successful candidate will also have a record of outstanding teaching, or will be able to provide evidence of potential to develop and deliver introductory and advanced courses in any area of analytical chemistry in the chemistry programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

The salary range of this position at the Assistant Professor rank is $105,000 to $125,000 for 12 months. Anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2022.
