University of Toronto Scarborough: Global Environmental Change

The Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences (DPES) at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a tenure-stream position in Global Environmental Change, with a particular focus on biogeochemical processes. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on July 1, 2019.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in an appropriate environmental or earth science field or a related area by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, and must possess a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Evidence of excellence in teaching is provided through a listing of teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and a teaching dossier, which should include: a coherent statement of teaching philosophy; sample course syllabi either of courses delivered by the candidate, or planned for the future; and any teaching evaluations available.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The appointment is in the Department of Physical and Environmental Science with full membership in the tri-campus Graduate Department of Physical and Environmental Science. The Environmental Science group in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences has particular strengths in the areas of biogeochemistry and environmental geosciences, with an overarching theme of multi-scale (molecular to ecosystem) responses to human-induced changes in terrestrial and aquatic systems. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Environmental Science program in DPES and will have opportunities to build new graduate courses in the Graduate Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences. Mount Allison University: Analytical Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Mount Allison University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Analytical Chemistry with applications to Biological or Environmental Science. INRS: Professor of Science and Plasmas Application

Context and summary
Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is the only institution in Québec (Canada) dedicated exclusively to graduate level university research and training. The influence of our faculty and students extends around the world. In partnership with the community and with industry, we are proud to contribute to the development of society through our discoveries and through the training of young scientists.
INRS would like to fill a new faculty position in the area of science and application of plasmas. The successful candidate will collaborate with the multidisciplinary research program at the INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre by contributing recognized expertise in plasma physics applied to materials synthesis, characterization and treatment.
Main duties and responsibilities
  • Develop an original and innovative program of applied and fundamental research in plasma physics preferably (but not exclusively) oriented towards the following research areas:
  • Plasma interaction with organic matter (complex molecules, cells, tissues, cell treatment or destruction, reconstructive surgery, etc.)
  • Plasma for nanomaterials synthesis related to various fields of application (catalysis, energy conversion, photonic, 3D impressions, etc.)
  • Secure external funding from a variety of funding agencies, both provincial and federal, also involving various partners from the public and private sectors whenever needed/pertinent.
  • Participate in teaching and training at the graduate level (both M.Sc. and Ph.D. students), as well as supervising post-doctoral fellows and research personnel.
Requirements
  • Doctorate in theoretical physics, chemistry, materials science or related fields, with specialization in experimental plasmas or assisted plasma processes.
  • Relevant postdoctoral research experience would be an asset.
  • Strong scientific publishing record illustrating leadership and innovation.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and networks as well as in collaboration with representatives of various agencies.
  • Aptitude for basic and applied research, as well as multidisciplinary teaching and mentoring at the masters and doctorate levels.
  • Entrepreneurial qualities and demonstrated ability to secure external research funding.
  • Preference will be given to junior candidates. However, exceptional senior candidates will also be considered.

David Leitch hired by the University of Victoria

Congratulations to David Leitch, who has been hired by the University of Victoria. Since 2014, he has worked in process chemistry and catalysis GlaxoSmithKline.

He completed his B.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia (Schafer group). He then completed postdoctoral fellowships at McGill University and the California Institute of Technology.
