Université d’Ottawa: Chimie et sciences biomoléculaires - Chaire de recherche du Canada de niveau 1 (matériaux verts)

 L’Université d’Ottawa sollicite des candidatures pour un poste de titulaire de Chaire de recherche du Canada (CRC) de niveau 1 sur les matériaux verts. La personne retenue occupera un poste menant à la permanence à la Faculté des sciences. Les candidats et les candidates doivent mettre en place un programme de recherche solide, financé par des fonds externes, et collaboratif dans le domaine de la chimie des matériaux et/ou des matériaux verts. Ce programme viendra compléter l'expertise existante du Département de chimie et des sciences biomoléculaires. Le ou la titulaire de la chaire établira des collaborations productives avec d'autres chimistes qui travaillent à développer des approches innovantes pour aborder des réactions et des transformations chimiques traditionnellement difficiles ou peu respectueuses de l'environnement. La personne retenue aura accès aux installations de base de classe mondiale en RMN, spectrométrie de masse et cristallographie aux rayons X dans la Faculté des sciences, aux installations de caractérisation des matériaux et de biocatalyse qui font partie du Centre de recherche et d'innovation en catalyse, ainsi qu'à un large éventail d'infrastructures de microscopie et d'analyse qui font partie du Centre de recherche sur les matériaux de pointe (CAMaR)

Les chaires de niveau 1, renouvelables une seule fois après sept ans, sont attribuées à des chercheurs exceptionnels reconnus ou des chercheuses exceptionnelles reconnues par leurs pairs comme des chefs de file mondiaux dans leur domaine. Pour chaque chaire de niveau 1, l’établissement reçoit 200 000 $ par année pendant sept ans.

Les candidats ou candidates à une chaire de niveau 1 doivent être des professeurs ou des professeures titulaires ou des professeurs agrégés ou des professeures agrégées dont on s'attend à ce qu'ils ou elles deviennent des professeurs ou des professeures titulaires dans l'année ou dans les deux ans suivant la mise en candidature. S'ils sont issus ou elles sont issues d'un autre secteur que le secteur universitaire, les candidats ou les candidates doivent posséder les qualifications nécessaires pour pouvoir être nommés à ces niveaux.

L'Université reconnaît l'incidence légitime que les congés (par exemple, un congé parental ou un congé de maladie) peuvent avoir sur les réalisations d'un ou une candidate en matière de recherche. Ces congés seront pris en considération dans le processus de sélection. Les personnes nouvellement sélectionnées pour une CRC peuvent également recevoir un financement d'infrastructure de la Fondation canadienne pour l'innovation (FCI), pour les aider à acheter l'équipement de pointe dont ils ou elles ont besoin pour effectuer leurs travaux.

Compétences requises :

Un doctorat en chimie ou dans une discipline connexe. Avoir fait preuve de réalisations exceptionnelles en matière de recherche indépendante dans le domaine de la chimie des matériaux et/ou des matériaux verts. Démontrer un engagement continu envers l'enseignement et la formation d’étudiants et d’étudiantes aux cycles supérieurs, un solide dossier de financement externe et une solide expérience et engagement pour les collaborations interdisciplinaires. Le ou la candidate doit démontrer d’excellentes aptitudes pour la communication orale et écrite en anglais ou en français. Une connaissance passive de l’autre langue officielle serait un atout.

Rang et salaire:

Poste professoral régulier menant à la permanence au rang de professeur titulaire à la Faculté des sciences. Ce poste est régi par une convention collective entre l’Université d’Ottawa et l’Association des professeurs de l’Université d’Ottawa.

Christopher Rowley Hired by Carleton University

Congratulations to Dr. Christopher Rowley, who has been hired as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Carleton University. Dr. Rowley completed his B.Sc. at Carleton in 2004, then completed a Ph.D. at the University of Ottawa. He held an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Professor Benoit Roux. He began his independent career as an Assistant Professor at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2012. He has published extensively on the development of new computational methods, models for the covalent modification of proteins, membrane permeation, and reaction mechanisms. He has served as a member of the Compute Canada Resource Allocation Committee, the National Academies of Sciences Panel Allocation of Supercomputing Time for the Study of Molecular Dynamics, work has been recognized by the ACS OpenEye Young Investigator Award and the MGMS Frank Blaney Award.

University of Ottawa: Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Interface of Chemistry and Mathematics

 The University of Ottawa invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Interface of Chemistry and Mathematics. The selected candidate will hold a tenure-track faculty position in the Faculty of Science. Applicants must have a PhD in Chemistry, Mathematics or a closely related field and have a demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong, externally funded, and collaborative research program in the broadly defined area of artificial intelligence, that complements the existing expertise of the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences and of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. This candidate will be a member of both departments and will contribute to teaching and service in both departments. The candidate will work to develop and apply modern AI methods to dissect chemical information and solve important chemistry problems, will establish productive collaborations with chemists who generate data, and will collaborate with mathematicians to further the development of novel analytical tools and methods.

The purpose of this measure is to increase the representation of members of the four designated groups in the allocation of Canada Research Chair positions.

Tier 2 Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. For each Tier 2 Chair, the institution receives $100,000 annually for five years, with an additional $20,000 annual research stipend for first-term Tier 2 Chairs.

Candidates should, at a minimum, be assistant or associate professors, or possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels. Candidates who are more than 10 years from their highest degree must contact the University of Ottawa directly for questions related to their potential eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair. The institution may nominate a professor or a researcher who is more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (see acceptable justifications). In such cases, the institution must submit to the Secretariat a formal justification (using the Tier 2 Justification Screening Form), explaining why the nominee is still considered to be an emerging scholar. The University recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.

Required qualifications: PhD in Chemistry, Mathematics, or a related discipline. Postdoctoral experience is mandatory. A demonstrated excellent research track record in artificial intelligence. A commitment to teaching and graduate training, a strong track record in and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaborations, and the ability to obtain external research funds. The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills in either English or French. A passive knowledge of the other official language would be an asset.

Rank and salary: Regular tenure-track academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Science. Applications for higher ranks will also be considered. This position is governed by a collective agreement between the University of Ottawa and the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa.
