The Department of Chemistry at Carleton University is seeking an outstanding new investigator for a preliminary full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor beginning July 1, 2023.

Additionally, preference will be given to candidates with a background in inorganic chemistry and science communication.

Researchers taking interdisciplinary, collaborative, and community-oriented approaches are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a sustained, externally funded research program and establish productive collaborations within the Department and beyond. The successful candidate must be able to teach core courses in inorganic chemistry, and strengths in teaching sustainable chemistry, and/or scientific communication are an asset.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D., postdoctoral experience, demonstrated research excellence and a commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate-level students. The successful candidate must show proven ability or significant potential to develop an independent research program and will be expected to maintain their research program by obtaining external competitive grants (e.g. Tri-council funding). The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent teaching and communication skills. Administrative experience will be an asset, as the candidates will be required to participate in the administrative work of the Department.

As part of an interdisciplinary department, the successful candidate’s research interests are expected to dovetail with that of the existing faculty members. Applicants with the ability to forge collaborations with members of the Department and interdisciplinary-oriented faculty across the University, as well as with allied agencies, will be given preference.

The Department seeks an emerging scholar with demonstrated research excellence in any area of organic synthesis and a commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. and relevant post-doctoral experience in Organic Chemistry or a related field. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an externally funded research program, that is recognized at the national and international level, with a strong focus on training at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral level. Moreover, the candidate will contribute to the vibrant nature of the Department of Chemistry through meaningful service supporting our academic and research activities.

Responsibilities:

A competitive research program supported by a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in this area could span a number of aspects in materials science for sustainable energy, and may cross traditional subdisciplines, from synthetic organic and/or inorganic chemistry, to physical, analytical, and/or quantum-level characterization.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a vibrant, externally funded research program, form productive research collaborations within the University of Manitoba and beyond, and provide high-quality training at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral level, as well as contributing to our teaching mission.

In addition, the candidate will contribute to the vibrant nature of the Department of Chemistry and the University of Manitoba by providing meaningful service and leadership supporting our academic and research activities.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a PhD and/or postdoctoral experience and proven success in research, with a highly productive track record of academic output. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability and/or potential to mentor students in materials research, and leadership in research and service initiatives. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

A Tier 2 CRC Nomination will be submitted soon after a successful candidate has been selected. Chairs are awarded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after a rigorous evaluation, and award decisions are expected in the Fall 2023. The appointment will be conditional on a successful Canada Research Chair nomination.

Applicants must be exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher since obtaining their terminal degree at the time of nomination. Tier 2 Chairs are valued at $100,000 per year for 5 years with an option to renew once. CUE’s Faculty of Science is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The Chemistry Program at CUE offers 3- and CSC accredited 4-year Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry, giving students the option to either prepare for a professional career or move forward to professional programs or graduate school. The chemistry program is designed to give students a broad understanding of the foundational concepts in chemistry. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play an active role in the administrative life of the Department of Chemistry, the Faculty of Science, and the University in general.

The Department of Chemistry offers a nationally-accredited Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree program in Chemistry (Major and Honours). Undergraduate students are actively involved in faculty research and graduate students are enrolled in the in Applied Science Program at both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels.
