Position Description

The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier II position in Computational Quantum Science and Technology for Chemistry. The successful candidate will be appointed as an Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with Tenure), and nominated for a CRC Tier II position, in the Department of Chemistry. This position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024 or earlier.

The successful candidate can join the Faculty of Science's Institute for Quantum Science and Technology, which comprises 17 faculty members and their research groups. Participation in the Centre for Molecular Simulation can also be envisioned. Moreover, within the Quantum City initiative of the City of Calgary, there could be opportunities for the successful applicant to explore.

Tier II candidates: must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, biology, computer science or related area; be an excellent emerging researcher in computational aspects of quantum science and technology with an emphasis on theory, computation and applications in chemistry of quantum computing, quantum materials, quantum sensors, quantum communications, quantum biochemistry or other chemistry-related topics with a clear component of quantum science and technology; a proven record of research excellence commensurate with the applicant's stage of career development and a demonstrated record or potential to establish an outstanding, externally funded research program are required. Interdisciplinarity is an asset and industrial partnerships are also encouraged.

Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank requires a strong publication record demonstrating excellence in computational quantum science and technology for chemistry. Prior success in obtaining peer-reviewed funding is an asset. Candidates should also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning and the use of contemporary approaches to teaching. Candidates must also showcase a clear dedication to upholding the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities.

Appointment at the Associate Professor rank requires a strong record of publications with a demonstrated impact of the associated research contributions in computational quantum science and technology for chemistry, as well as evidence of securing ongoing external research funding. They must also have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the University level that utilizes contemporary approaches to teaching, and evidence of graduate student supervision. Candidates must also have proven dedication to upholding the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities.

Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, Covid-19-related interruptions, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program's Tier II justification process. University of Saskatchewan: Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Chemical Synthesis

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) is pleased to invite applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Chemical Synthesis. The Canada Research Chair (CRC) Program is the flagship of a national strategy to make Canada one of the world’s top countries in research and development (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca).

The successful candidate will build an internationally recognized program in synthetic chemistry, broadly defined. The Chair will attract and maintain extramural funding, participate in graduate supervision, and contribute to design and delivery of the department's undergraduate and graduate chemistry curriculum. The successful nominee will initiate and lead an innovative and impactful program of research, foster interdisciplinary and multi-sector collaborations, and raise the national and international profile and impact of USask through an innovative research program.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or equivalent qualification, with a track record of achievements in the broadly defined area of chemical synthesis. The candidate must demonstrate evidence of emerging, world-class research capabilities in chemical synthesis as shown by a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications (or equivalent) in chemistry; demonstrate the  ability to propose an original, high impact, innovative research program with the potential to achieve international recognition within the next 5 to 10 years; have the potential to develop and retain excellent trainees, students, and future researchers; and is expected to secure significant external research funding to support these expectations.

Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher at the time of nomination. Applicants who are more than 10 years past the year in which they earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The successful applicant will be asked to prepare the Tier 2 CRC proposal with the assistance of USask and, if successful, will subsequently be appointed as a tenured or tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Science. The CRC nomination is subject to review and final approval by the Canada Research Chairs Program. The faculty appointment is conditional on approval of the CRC.

The standard salary bands for this position for the 2022-2023 academic year are as follows: Assistant Professor: $99,945 - $120,099; Associate Professor: $120,099 - $140,253, with the possibility of merit-based additions. A chair stipend is also provided. This position includes a comprehensive benefits package which consists of a dental, health and extended vision care plan; a pension plan, life insurance (compulsory and voluntary), academic long-term disability, sick leave, travel insurance and death benefits; an employee assistance program; a professional expense allowance; and a flexible health and wellness spending program.

McMaster University: Chemistry & Chemical Biology - Contractually Limited Assistant Professor (Chemical Education)

Position Description:
The Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology at McMaster University is seeking candidates to fill a one-year contractually limited, teaching-focused faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Chemical Education. The preferred start date for the appointment is August 1, 2023.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Biology at the time of appointment and should have a demonstrated a record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level. Duties include teaching a range of courses, including general (first year) chemistry, chemical biology laboratory and other courses (possibly in Polymer Chemistry), as well as administrative service. Participation in curriculum development and/or undergraduate laboratory supervision may also be required. There is no expectation that the candidate will develop an independent laboratory research program, but interest in pedagogical research and student supervision is encouraged.

University of Victoria: experimental organic chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Victoria invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in experimental organic chemistry, broadly defined, including but not limited to synthesis, materials, catalysis, and bio-organic chemistry. The successful applicant will be offered a tenure-track appointment with an expected start date of July 1, 2024 or as negotiated.  A PhD degree in chemistry is required and post-doctoral experience is strongly preferred.


The Department of Chemistry (www.chemistry.uvic.ca) is a research-intensive unit that is dedicated to providing outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs. The successful candidate will be an emerging world class scholar who has demonstrated research productivity and potential to achieve international recognition within the next 5–10 years. The appointee will be expected to establish an independent, creative, innovative, high-impact, and externally funded research program. The proposed research program should have the potential for national and international collaborations, including industrial partnerships, and should be complementary to the research activities at the University of Victoria. It is anticipated that the appointee will develop as an outstanding teacher and mentor of a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students, and have the potential to manage a healthy research environment that integrates a diverse group of employees.

Dr. Kate Marczenko hired by Carleton University

Congratulations to Dr. Kate Marczenko, who has been hired by Carleton University. Dr. Katherine M. Marczenko (Kate) obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. She conducted research projects during her undergraduate studies under the guidance of Prof. Michael Denk and Prof. Dmitriy Soldatov. Kate further pursued a Master of Science degree at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Under the supervision of Prof. Gary Schrobilgen, she focused on the transformation of shock-sensitive xenon oxides into shock-insensitive materials. In 2018, Kate joined the group of Prof. Saurabh Chitnis at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Here, she pursued her Ph.D. studies, dedicating her research efforts to investigating the chemistry of heavy Group 15 amides. Kate's research accomplishments were acknowledged through various accolades, including the prestigious Vanier award.


Returning to her alma mater, the University of Guelph, in 2021, Kate assumed the role of Crystallographer and Instructor, where she excelled in sharing her expertise and inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Continuing her academic journey, Kate is set to embark on a new chapter as she joins Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, starting June 1, 2023. Her research program will focus on the intersection of energetic materials, main-group chemistry, and crystallography.

DUTIES

Thompson Rivers University is looking for a one-year contract faculty member to teach a selection of first year chemistry labs and second year organic chemistry labs in fall 2023 and winter 2024.

The position will have the successful candidate teaching six labs a term as well as assisting in the development of undergraduate laboratory teaching material and participation in departmental service. 

There is a possibility that the successful candidate may be asked to teach a section of CHEM 1520 in winter 2024; if this occurs, the workload will be adjusted.

QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in relevant field or near completion.  Experience teaching first year chemistry is an asset.

Candidates should provide a cover letter, a recent CV, and a statement of their teaching philosophy with their applications. 

Non-Canadian applicants are asked to provide proof of employment eligibility in their application.
