The Integrated Science program and the Department of Chemistry at Western University invite
applications for a one-year, limited-term faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Lecturer.
The anticipated start date is July 1, 2020.
Western University delivers an academic experience second to none. Western challenges the best and
brightest faculty, staff, and students to commit to the highest global standards. Western attracts
individuals with a broad worldview, seeking to study, influence, and lead in the international community.
Since 1878, The Western Experience has combined academic excellence with life-long opportunities for
intellectual, social, and cultural growth in order to better serve our communities.
The Integrated Science program (WISc), launched in 2016, is designed for undergraduate students who
have a passion for science and the interdisciplinary nature of scientific discovery. WISc combines the
focussed coursework of a traditional honours degree with a set of Integrated Science courses that also
emphasize professional skills and community engagement. As a high-impact program with a vision to
transform science education, WISc is a testbed for innovative teaching and learning strategies and
pedagogical approaches. More details on WISc can be found at:
https://www.uwo.ca/sci/undergraduate/future_students/academic_programs/integrated_science%20WISc/
index.html .
The Department of Chemistry (www.uwo.ca/chem ) is a vibrant and collegial workplace with over 30
research and teaching faculty and 20 support staff. Training 2200 students per year in first-year
chemistry, between 50–90 of whom join a chemistry program, the department is committed to outstanding
teaching and learning. Through the addition of new undergraduate facilities and the modernization of
many courses in the past decade, the student-centered activities in the department have seen significant
growth and transformation.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and talented educator who will continue the trajectory of excellence and
transformation in undergraduate science and chemistry education at Western. The successful candidate
will be appointed in the Department of Chemistry and will have their responsibilities equally divided
between Integrated Science and Chemistry. Responsibilities in both Integrated Science and Chemistry
include developing, improving, and teaching undergraduate courses. The successful candidate will also
be expected to embrace service opportunities such as outreach, counselling, and recruitment. Please
note that this position is a teaching-focussed position and not a research-focussed position.
In addition to having a proven interest and ability in undergraduate education, the successful candidate
will have an MSc or PhD in Chemistry, Chemistry Education, or a closely related field (a PhD is preferred
and required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor). Equally important is the ability of the
candidate to be able to foster equality, diversity, and inclusion in a dynamic, student-centered
environment.
We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate the following assets or experience:
● Interdisciplinarity across the sciences, particularly in biology, math, and physics
● Innovative undergraduate course, curriculum, or laboratory design
● Experience in providing high-impact learning experiences
● Use of methods and approaches that enhance student engagement and learning
● Interest in technology-enhanced and online-learning initiatives
The starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Applicants should email a single PDF file containing a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, evidence of
teaching effectiveness, a statement of teaching philosophy, the contact details of at least three referees
who can email letters of support by May 29, 2020, and a completed Application for Full-Time Faculty
