University of British Columbia: Sessional Lecturer

2021-22 Winter Sessional Lecturer Positions

The Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia invites applications for sessional lecturers for the 2021-22 Winter Session (Terms 1 and 2, September – December 2021 and January – April, 2022). The salary range for these positions depends on qualifications and experience. Individuals with a M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in chemistry and successful teaching experience are preferred. Familiarity with computer interfaces and online teaching systems (UBC Canvas) is an asset. The successful candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a team environment.

We are seeking applications to teach courses from the roster of courses shown below.

NOTE: Not all courses listed may need to be filled by sessional faculty.

TERM 1 (September – December 2021):

CHEM 111 – Structure, Bonding and Equilibrium in Chemistry: Fundamentals of bonding theories, structural chemistry and equilibrium with applications relevant to modern society.

CHEM 121 (2 sections) – Structure and Bonding in Chemistry: Fundamentals of bonding theories and structural chemistry, with applications relevant to modern society.

CHEM 203 laboratory – Introduction to Organic Chemistry: Experimental synthetic chemistry.  The instructor will be responsible for the delivery and assessment of CHEM 203 laboratory, a secondary activity within CHEM 203 that introduces and develops introductory synthetic techniques within an organic chemistry laboratory.

CHEM 233 (2 sections) – Organic Chemistry for the Biological Sciences: Reactions and properties of carbonyl compounds, carbohydrates, amino acids, nucleic acids.

CHEM 260 – Organic Chemistry for Engineers: A description of the properties and reactions of organic compounds.

TERM 2 (January – April 2022):

CHEM 123 (two 0.5 sections, organic portion) – Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Organic Chemistry: Fundamentals of chemical reactivity: thermodynamics; kinetics; organic chemistry, including stereochemistry; applications relevant to modern society.

TERMS 1 & 2 (September 2021 – April 2022)

CHEM 235 (laboratory course) – Organic Chemistry Laboratory:  Experimental synthetic chemistry. The instructor will be responsible for the delivery and assessment of CHEM 235, a course that introduces and develops introductory synthetic techniques within an organic chemistry laboratory.
