Dr. Marissa L. Clapson has started her new position as assistant professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Prince Edward Island. Marissa received her PhD in 2021 from the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Warren Piers. Her thesis focused on small molecule activation utilizing cobalt PCP carbene complexes & SoTL explorations in the gamification of learning in chemistry. Marissa later pursued postdoctoral studies at the University of Windsor working with Dr. Marcus Drover on the synthesis of base metal complexes featuring boron in the secondary coordination sphere. Her current research focuses on the development of sustainable base metal systems for the conversion of environmental pollutants to usable feedstock chemicals. In this pursuit her research group is working to develop redox active PCP pincer ligands featuring Lewis acidic moieties in the secondary coordination sphere for CO2 reduction.
Beyond her laboratory pursuits, Marissa is an active researcher in chemistry education, working to incorporate gamified and inquiry-based learning experience into classrooms as well as chemistry conferences. She has been recognized through several awards including the 2022 IDW Rigaku Oral Presentation Award, NSERC CGS-D, and the 2020 University of Calgary Graduate Teaching Award.
In her spare time Marissa enjoys exploring the wilderness (hiking), reading, and sampling new wines. You can expect to find her in her office brainstorming new and exciting teaching activities, mentoring junior researchers, and googling new student slang.
