Department Statement

Vibrant, multidisciplinary and innovative, the Faculty of Arts and Science is one of Université de Montréal’s largest faculties. Through its 29 departments, schools, centres and institutes, it offers over 300 programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, some of which are unique in Quebec. It is also home to some 30 interdisciplinary research groups and centres. Every day, its 650 strong faculty members is helping shape a better tomorrow by opening up knowledge and promoting the cross-fertilization of different perspectives.

 

The Department of Chemistry of the Université de Montréal is one of the most productive and dynamic chemistry departments in Canada and internationally. Its stellar reputation is based on the excellence of its faculty of 33 professors, several of whom are distinguished scholars and hold prestigious research chairs. The Department’s laboratories are located on a new campus dedicated to the natural sciences (https://campusmil.umontreal.ca), with state-of-the-art laboratories (NMR, X-ray diffraction, materials characterization, mass spectrometry, etc.). As a member of the Department of Chemistry, the candidate can be affiliated with the newly created Institut Courtois for blue-sky research in materials science. 

 

Your day-to-day impact  

Through teaching and research activities, you will play a pivotal role in fostering excellence within your faculty. Furthermore, you will enhance the prominence of your area of expertise and actively participate in the daily activities of our renowned university. In this role, your responsibilities will include: 

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate classes and develop pedagogical initiatives for our new undergraduate program. 
  • Develop a high-level research program in inorganic chemistry while extending the frontiers of the discipline. The department strongly encourages applicants to develop a topical theme in inorganic chemistry with high potential impact that aligns with or complements existing departmental research activities.
  • Contribute to committees and to the development of the department, the faculty and the institution  through participation in scientific, administrative and social activities.
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote the discipline (publications, conferences, etc.).

 

What you'll need to succeed 

  • Hold a PhD in inorganic chemistry;
  • Have post-doctoral research experience;
  • Have an excellent publication record in the field;
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality university teaching in inorganic chemistry at all levels;
  • Propose a world-class research program in inorganic chemistry with the potential to develop internal, national and international collaborations;
  • Demonstrate the potential to supervise graduate students; 
  • Adequate proficiency in the French language or a strong commitment to mastering the proficiency level required upon assuming the position in accordance to Université de Montréal’s Language Policy. A French language learning assistance program is offered to all professors who wish to acquire French language skills or enhance their communication abilities.
