Thompson Rivers University: Physical Sciences - Assistant Teaching Professor (Chemistry)

The Department of Art History & Art Conservation at Queen’s University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates interested in teaching a course in the following: Properties of Materials (ARTC 802*), Instrumental Methods of Analysis (ARTC 808*), Research Project (ARTC 898). These courses will be delivered remotely with an expected enrolment of 11 students.  Candidates should have a M.Sc. or Ph.D, and teaching experience in science or conservation science. This is a fall term appointment for the period 1 September 2020 to 31 December 2020, with classes in session from 14 September 2020 to 4 December 2020. Due to COVID-19 these courses will be offered remotely for the Fall Term.

Course Description

 

ARTC-802* Properties of Materials This course discusses organic and inorganic materials important in conservation. Topics covered will include the chemical structure, properties, degradation processes, and conservation treatments of the different materials. Scientific principles that are encountered in conservation treatment will also be studied. Half course. A. Murray.

 

ARTC-808* Instrumental Methods of Analysis This course is designed to give an understanding of selected instrumental methods of analysis used in art conservation. Aspects covered include the fundamental principles underlying the techniques, the instrumentation, and the practical applications and limitations. The principles of colour and light will also be covered.  Half course; fall.

 

ARTC-898 Research Project Research will be carried out in consultation with and under the guidance of the instructor. Each student will conduct a research project and produce a written report. Students will need to obtain the instructor's permission to pursue research in an area relevant to the field of art conservation. The course will include oral presentations and formal reports. The fall term of this full year course will be taught remotely and focuses on the development of the project and research design.

University of Victoria: Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2 in Quantum Computing for Modeling of Molecules and Materials

The Faculty of Science and the Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technologies (CAMTEC) at the University of Victoria invite applications for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2 in “Quantum Computing for Modeling of Molecules and Materials”. The successful applicant will be nominated by the university for a CRC Tier 2 and upon approval by the CRC Secretariat, will then be offered a tenured or tenure-track appointment at the appropriate rank. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferably, the position will involve a formal cross-appointment in the Departments of Chemistry and Physics and Astronomy. 
Quantum computing is an exciting and fast-growing research area that is generating new approaches for the calculation and prediction of molecular and material properties. The province of British Columbia (BC) houses some of the most innovative quantum computing companies in the world and it has recently allocated funds for a new Quantum Algorithms Institute aimed at securing a steady flow of highly-trained personnel to support our Provincial industrial leadership in this area. The University of Victoria, through the Faculty of Science, CAMTEC and the Matrix Institute for Applied Data Science, provides an ideal environment to support the Provincial initiative by enabling a high-level research program in the application of quantum computational tools to solve relevant problems in chemistry, physics, materials science and nanotechnology.
Tier 2 CRC Chairs are one of Canada’s premier early-career recognition and recruitment programs, and are intended for exceptional emerging scholars. Candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years after earning their highest degree at the time of nomination (expected nomination by April 2021). However, applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Requirements

The successful candidate will be an emerging world-class scholar who has demonstrated research productivity and potential to achieve international recognition within the next 5-10 years.  The appointee will be expected to establish an independent, creative, innovative, high-impact and externally-funded research program. The proposed research program should have the potential for national and international collaborations, including industrial partnerships, and should be complementary to the quantum computing activities at the University of Victoria and in BC. It is anticipated that the appointee will develop as an outstanding teacher and mentor of diverse undergraduate and graduate students, and has the potential to manage a healthy research environment that integrates diverse employees. A PhD degree in an area related to quantum computing or computational materials science is required.

Eric Keske hired at Trent University [@TrentU, @EricKeske]

Eric completed his B.Sc. at the University of Western Ontario, and then moved to Queen's University for his Ph.D. working with Professor Cathleen Crudden. His research was focused on the design and development of novel homogeneous catalysts for use in organic synthesis. During his Ph.D., Eric was awarded with multiple teaching awards and participated in a research exchange at the University of Waterloo working with Professor Eric Fillion in organic synthesis. Additionally, Eric was awarded the Dobbin Scholarship from the Ireland Canada University Federation (ICUF) which sent him to Dublin Ireland to work with Professor Martin Albrecht at University College Dublin.
In 2015, Eric was selected as one of the 45 international Reaxys Ph.D. Prize finalists, and was awarded an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, UK, working with Professor Guy Lloyd-Jones in mechanistic organic chemistry. On his return to Canada, Eric’s second postdoctoral fellowship was at the University of Toronto working with Professor Robert Morris designing bifunctional ligands for applications in catalytic hydrogenation. Eric will begin his appointment at Trent University in July and begin a research program dedicated to homogeneous catalysis and the development of synthetic methods for conjugated organic materials.

Christine Le Hired by York University [@christine_m_le]

Christine Le will be joining the Department of Chemistry at York University in July 2020. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology at the University of New Mexico. Prior to this, Christine was a NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Prof. F. Dean Toste at UC Berkeley and gained expertise in the area of chiral anion catalysis. Christine obtained her PhD degree at the University of Toronto in the group of Prof. Mark Lautens, working in the area of palladium-catalyzed carbohalogenation reactions. Research in the Le Group spans the areas of organic, inorganic, and medicinal chemistry with an overarching emphasis on mechanism-driven reaction and catalyst design.
