University of Alberta: Physical Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta seeks applicants for the Manley and Mirian Johnston Professorship in Chemistry. This is a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Organic Chemistry with preference given to applicants having a research focus in physical organic chemistry. Exceptionally qualified applicants at the Associate Professor level will also be considered. The position has a starting date of July 1, 2022.

The University of Alberta is committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce.  As such, priority will be given to applications from women, gender minorities, persons with disabilities, Indigenous peoples, members of visible minorities, and groups that are traditionally underrepresented in Chemistry.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. and demonstrate the potential to develop an innovative, robust, and externally-funded research program, as well as engage in relevant domestic and international research networks. Research potential will be evidenced by the candidate’s record of publications, presentations, and other relevant research outputs; record of (or plans for) research funding; a summary of future research plans; and three appropriately supportive and specific letters of reference.

Enthusiastic teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels is expected, with preference for teaching of core courses within current graduate and undergraduate Organic Chemistry curriculum. Supervisory and teaching potential will be documented via the candidate’s teaching dossier (if applicable); a statement of teaching philosophy; and their letters of reference.

The successful candidate must indicate how they will work to expand the equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) of the Department through a statement describing their plans to incorporate EDI into their teaching, research, mentorship, and service to the scientific and University community. Within their EDI statement, applicants are encouraged to describe how they increase diversity and representation within the Department of Chemistry.

The Department has vibrant research programs encompassing most areas of modern chemistry including materials and nanoscience, catalysis, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, spectroscopy, synthesis and medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, and computational chemistry. An outstanding research environment with access to excellent support facilities is offered (https://www.ualberta.ca/chemistry/index.html).
