University of Calgary: Canada Research Chair (Tier II), Quantum Chemistry on Quantum Computers

Position Description

The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier II position in Quantum Chemistry on Quantum Computers. The successful candidate will be appointed as an Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with Tenure), and nominated for a CRC Tier II position, in the Department of Chemistry. This position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022 or later.

The successful candidate can join the Faculty of Science's Institute for Quantum Science and Technology, which comprises 17 faculty members and their research groups, and the Institute is a member of the Quantum Alberta consortium, which is a community of quantum scientists, technologists and engineers working in the Province of Alberta.

Tier II candidates: must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, computer science or related area; be an excellent emerging researcher in using quantum computing for quantum chemistry; have a background in quantum chemistry with an interest in quantum computing or who has background in quantum computing but with an interest in chemistry applications; a proven record of research excellence commensurate with the applicant's stage of career development and a demonstrated record or potential to establish an outstanding, externally funded research program are required. Interdisciplinarity is an asset and industrial partnerships are also encouraged.

Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank requires a strong publication record demonstrating excellence in quantum computing for quantum chemistry. Prior success in obtaining peer-reviewed funding is an asset. Candidates should also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning and the use of contemporary approaches to teaching.

Appointment at the Associate Professor rank requires a strong record of publications in high-quality journals associated with quantum computing or quantum chemistry, as well as evidence of securing ongoing external research funding. They must also have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the University level that utilizes contemporary approaches to teaching, and evidence of graduate student supervision.

Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program's Tier II justification process.
