University of Alberta: Prebiotic chemistry and artificial cellular systems

The University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured position in prebiotic chemistry and artificial cellular systems at the Associate or Full Professor level. The appointment will be in the Faculty of Science’s Department of Chemistry, which has 35 research faculty and approximately 210 graduate students, supported by excellent services, including X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, and high-field NMR laboratories.  Excellent electronic, machine, and glassblowing shops, and a biological services laboratory are other key components of Departmental infrastructure.

This new hire is expected take a leadership role in continuing the long tradition of excellence that the University of Alberta has established in nanotechnology and chemical biology and act as a catalyst to increase the visibility of the institution in the field of nanobiotechnology and prebiotic chemistry. The Department’s expertise in nanotechnology is reinforced by the collaborative and supportive culture that emerges from interactions between faculty and students across Edmonton through programs like the student-run nanoGroup and researchers at NINT/NRC-Edmonton. In addition, the University of Alberta’s strengths in chemical biology, bioinformatics and metabolomics, bioengineering and synthetic biology, and artificial intelligence will complement the new hire’s research program in prebiotic chemistry and artificial cells. There will also be opportunities to collaborate with the Faculty of Medicine to ensure that technological advancements can be shared and tailored to meet the needs of patients.

Position requirements include:

• A PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or an aligned field
• An exceptional and internationally-recognized research program directed towards understanding the role of peptides in prebiotic systems as well as expertise in artificial cells, the next generation of smart stimuli-responsive nanobiotechnology
• A proven track record of excellence in teaching, mentoring, research training, outreach, professional service, and a demonstrated commitment to supporting the involvement of diverse groups in research
• The appointment will be at either the tenured-track Associate Professor or tenured Full Professor level and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will:

• Develop and prepare relevant materials (lecture and laboratory).
• Effectively deliver assigned teaching duties.
• Contribute to the operational activities to both the faculty of science and the Chemistry Program including meetings, and program planning.
• Participate in research and scholarship that actively engages undergraduate students.

Requirements for the position include:

• A Ph.D. in Chemistry;
• University-level teaching experience in relevant areas;
• A demonstrated record of strong research; and
• Demonstrated ability to work collegially as a team member.

The normal teaching assignment is 4 courses per semester; however, faculty are encouraged to apply for a reduction in teaching to allow for an active research program. In addition, the successful candidates must be committed to building professional relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the broader community.
