University of Lethbridge: Experimental Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Lethbridge invites applications for a tenure-track position in any area of experimental chemistry. This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The expected start date of the appointment is July 1, 2025, subject to budgetary approval. Minimum qualifications include undergraduate and doctoral degrees in Chemistry, as well as appropriate postdoctoral experience. The successful candidate will be expected to mount an externally funded research program that includes undergraduate and graduate students and will also teach required introductory and senior courses in the Chemistry program. Evidence of teaching experience is an asset, as is an ability to teach X-ray crystallography. The successful candidate will bring complementary experience and expertise that will support the diversification of our curriculum and research interests.

We are seeking a candidate with the capability to engage and inspire students in their academic work, and who will show initiative in contributing to the department’s programs and curriculum development.

Our Team

The successful candidate will join the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry team which consists of 12 research-active professors and 9 instructors. In addition to a strong undergraduate program with majors in both Chemistry and Biochemistry, the department has a thriving graduate program with a total of approximately 60 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. The Department is proud of the state-of-the-art Science Commons Building, which contains shared and dedicated lab space for the new position. This 38,500 m2 building houses cutting edge research facilities (including 700 MHz, 500 MHz and 300 MHz NMR spectrometers, an EPR spectrometer with X-band and 4K data collection capabilities and a Rigaku-Oxford SuperNova Duo/Pilatus 200K X-ray diffractometer) and laboratory spaces that foster collaborations within and between disciplines. University of Alberta: Director, Quantum Horizons Alberta - Edmonton

https://www.quantumhorizonsab.ca/ (QHA) was established in 2023 as an Alberta-wide initiative to expand our foundational knowledge of quantum science, to pursue transformational research into the potential of quantum physics, and to enhance Alberta's stature as a globally recognized jurisdiction for quantum research and innovation. Initiated by a $12-million gift from a group of visionary donors, QHA is a $25-million centre of excellence that will build on and increase Alberta's considerable capacity in quantum research through a partnership with the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, and the University of Lethbridge.

QHA will catalyze existing expertise and attract new talent with the goal to recruit a minimum of eight new quantum research professors to Alberta over the next five years along with funding for many postdoctoral scholars and graduate students. Together, these initiatives will train the next generation of quantum scientists, including postdoctoral scholars and graduate students at each of the universities.

QHA will enable a long-term and sustainable path for Alberta's leadership in quantum research and innovation, creating impact that will reach far beyond Alberta.

The University of Alberta is actively seeking an established researcher to take on the pivotal role of inaugural Director, Quantum Horizons Alberta - Edmonton and tenured Full Professor. The Director will be tasked with guiding this initiative to new frontiers of knowledge and application in quantum science. This role requires a visionary leader, someone capable of inspiring a diverse team of researchers, graduate students, and stakeholders towards achieving ambitious goals that will accelerate and impact quantum research outcomes. The Director will oversee strategic planning, operational and research direction, and the integration of quantum sciences at the intersection of academia, government, and industry, all while establishing and promoting a culture of excellence and inclusion.

The successful candidate for this prestigious position must hold a Ph.D. in physics or a related field and will be offered a tenured appointment at the rank of Full Professor within the Department, in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and a comprehensive benefits package. Ehsan Hamzehpoor hired by Université de Montréal

Ehsan grew up in Dehyadegar, a village in Sirjan, Iran. After finishing high school, he moved to Tehran where he studied for his bachelor’s degree in Pure Chemistry. He then fell head over heels for the city of Montreal and started a Ph.D. in material chemistry at McGill University (2017-2023) as an FRQNT scholar. Under the supervision of Professor Dmytro F. Perepichka he worked on functional π-conjugated materials and solid-state photophysics and defended his Ph.D. thesis titled “Crystal Engineering of Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Organic Solids”. In 2023, he moved to the University of British Columbia at Vancouver to begin his postdoctoral research as a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow and a
Killam Laureate, working on organic macromolecules and supramolecular chemistry using reversible covalent bonds in Prof. Mark J. MacLachlan's group.

In spring 2025, Ehsan will embark on a new chapter as an Assistant Professor in organic synthesis of materials within the Department of Chemistry at Université de Montréal.

Dr. Abishek K. Iyer hired by the University of Manitoba


Dr. Abishek K. Iyer earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Delhi. Dr. Iyer worked as a research assistant at Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) under Dr. Sebastian C. Peter where his research focused on the synthesis of intermetallic and organic-inorganic hybrid materials. In 2013, he started his Ph.D. research under Prof. Arthur Mar, at the University of Alberta, Canada. His research focused on developing rational design principles for introducing acentric building units to increase the chances of forming noncentrosymmetric structures.

In 2019 he joined the group of Prof. Mercouri Kanatzidis’s at Northwestern University as a postdoctoral fellow. During this time, he addressed challenges in developing new synthetic methods, designing structural principles, and growing crystals of high-efficiency optical materials as IR detectors for detecting air pollutants (CO2, NOx) impacting the climate and optical countermeasures for defense purposes. He has started as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, University of Manitoba.

Jacob (Terry) Blaskovits hired at the University of Alberta

Jacob (Terry) Blaskovits joined the group of Dr. Denis Andrienko at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Mainz, Germany) as a postdoctoral fellow in autumn 2023. He obtained his PhD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPF/ETH Lausanne, Switzerland), working on the data-driven design of organic electronic materials in the group of Prof. Clémence Corminboeuf. He received his MSc at Université Laval (Québec City, Canada) as a Schmeelk Canada fellow in 2018, working under the supervision of Profs. Mario Leclerc (polymer chemistry) and Paul

Johnson (computational chemistry). In 2016, he was awarded an NSERC foreign study fellowship to conduct research for half a year in the group of Prof. Alán Aspuru-Guzik at Harvard University (Cambridge, USA). He received a BSc from Université Laval in 2016 as an inaugural Schulich Leader scholar. Beyond his research activities, he is a passionate educator and classical musician, and has taught music and science at Gandhi Ashram School in rural northern India in 2018-2019.

He will join the University of Alberta Department of Chemistry in summer 2025 as an Assistant Professor.

University of Manitoba: Instructor I (organic chemistry)

The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full-time probationary position at the rank of Instructor I, commencing September 1, 2024, or on a mutually agreed upon date. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Department seeks an emerging scholar with a commitment to excellence in teaching and pedagogical development in Organic Chemistry. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated expertise in Organic Chemistry (e.g. relevant teaching experience, Ph.D., publications in organic chemistry). Duties include undergraduate teaching, including live lecture, lab-based instruction, and service-related activities. Additional duties may include pedagogical, course and lab development. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a track record of outstanding teaching contributions, curriculum development, and work in a collaborative environment with diverse students.
