Trent University: environmental analytical chemistry

Trent University, Peterborough campus, invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Chemistry Department at the rank of assistant professor in the field of environmental analytical chemistry starting July 1, 2023, subject to budgetary approval. The Department has vibrant research programs including material science, catalysis, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical biology, and computational chemistry. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make extensive use of the state-of-the-art analytical research facilities at the Trent University Water Quality Centre (WQC) to support their research (https://www.trentu.ca/wqc/).

A Ph.D. degree in chemistry, or a directly related discipline is required. We expect the successful candidate to develop a robust, externally-funded research program in analytical/environmental chemistry, analytical instrumentation applications, or instrumental method development, as evidenced by a strong publication record, and to participate in Trent’s WQC. The potential for high-caliber teaching and mentorship in analytical chemistry or instrumental chemistry at the undergraduate level is an asset. The successful candidate will actively recruit and supervise graduate students in either Trent’s Materials Science or Environmental & Life Sciences graduate programs, and contribute to service at the departmental and university level as required by the departmental practices and the TUFA collective agreement.

The successful candidate will teach four one-semester courses. At the undergraduate level these include, but are not limited to, courses in analytical chemistry, instrumental chemistry, and introductory chemistry. At the graduate level, teaching includes courses through Trent’s Master in Instrumental Chemical Analysis program.

Candidate's applications should include the following:

  • A curriculum vitae (including confirmation to legally work in Canada)
  • A concise research proposal of no more than five pages
  • A statement of teaching experience and philosophy
  • The names, email addresses, and telephone numbers of three referees willing to write on the candidate’s behalf.

Please send applications as a single PDF to chemistry@trentu.ca, attention Professor Steven Rafferty, Chair, Chemistry Department. The deadline for the receipt of applications is October 14, 2022.

Trent University is actively committed to creating a diverse and inclusive campus community and encourages applications from all qualified candidates. Trent University offers accommodation for applicants with disabilities in its recruitment processes. If you require accommodation during the recruitment process or require an accessible version of a document or publication, please contact srafferty@trentu.ca.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.  While all applicants are thanked for their interest and applications to this position, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
