Huck Grover Hired by Memorial

Congratulations to Huck Grover, who has been hired by Memorial University of Newfoundland as a tenure-track assistant professor. He completed his B.Sc. (Hons) at Wifrid Laurier before completing his Ph.D. at Western University with Michael Kerr.  He then moved to the University of California - Berkeley where he worked for Tom Maimone. Dr. Grover is a native of Hamilton, Ontario and completed his B.Sc. (Hons) at Wilfrid Laurier University. He then completed a Ph.D. in chemistry at Western University under the supervision of Professor Michael Kerr. Since 2014, he has been a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California - Berkeley with Tom Maimone.  Huck is a natural product synthetic organic chemist who will develop new synthetic methods for the synthesis of natural products and pharmaceuticals. Congratulations Huck!

Position Purpose

Supervises, coordinates and manages undergraduate chemistry teaching laboratories, operating budget, and new experiment design and implementation. Ensures that necessary equipment and material are available, functioning properly and ready for use at all times, to foster a positive student learning experience. Teaches the equivalent of a three-unit (credit) course per year.

Essential Qualifications

PhD in chemistry
Demonstrated knowledge of advanced instrumentation used in physical, analytical, inorganic and organic chemistry teaching labs
Three years’ experience in staff supervision and management
Demonstrated experience in designing, modifying or optimizing upper-year undergraduate laboratory experiments in physical, analytical or inorganic chemistry
Knowledge of safe working practices (e.g., WHMIS) and lab safety
Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and set priorities
Ability to work within a budget
Experience in teaching (lectures or laboratory courses)

Thomas Baumgartner hired at York

Congratulations to Thomas Baumgartner, who was hired as a professor in the Department of Chemistry at York University. Dr. Baumgartner completed his PhD at the University of Bonn and completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Toronto. He was a habilitand at RWTH Aachen University before taking a faculty position at the University of Calgary in 2006. Professor Baumgartner group studies phosphaorganic and organometallic materials for the generation of solar energy and its storage.

Chemistry - Senior Instructor / Instructor II / Instructor I

The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full time two year Term position at the rank of Senior Instructor/Instructor II/Instructor I, commencing September 1, 2017 and ending August 31, 2019 subject to final budgetary approval. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate must have a M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field, and documented evidence of excellence in teaching at a university level. The position includes teaching responsibilities in introductory undergraduate chemistry in classroom and laboratory settings and duties may also include upper division supervision of the lab programs in areas including, but not limited to, analytical and physical chemistry. Experience in the use of instrumentation commonly used in these subject areas is desired. The candidate must provide evidence of their proficiency to teach in all of these areas. Final assigned duties will be subject to the needs of the Department. Faculty members at the rank of Instructor at the University of Manitoba also are expected to contribute to service. There is no formal research expectation in this position.
