About this Opportunity

Located in Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island, the Department of Chemistry at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Senior Laboratory Instructor position in synthetic chemistry.

The Department of Chemistry offers multiple undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and its members conduct internationally recognized research in several fields of chemistry. It runs a full program of courses in chemistry designed for students intending to major in the field, as well as courses for students in a range of other programs. The Department utilizes a range of laboratories to provide experiential learning and research opportunities in chemistry courses. The Department fosters a culture of student engagement and success.

The successful candidate will have an MSc in Chemistry in synthetic chemistry plus a minimum of 3 years of work experience in a scientific environment and teaching experience; a PhD in synthetic chemistry is preferred. This is a continuing position.  Only those that hold Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency are eligible to work in continuing positions.

The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $63,696 - $71,690 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $83,264 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

The Senior Lab Instructor (SLI) supports all components of the undergraduate chemistry laboratory curriculum within a sub-discipline, including preparation and development of experimental content, preparing the Teaching Assistant Instructors (TAs) to teach and grade the work of the undergraduate students, teaching or tutoring those undergraduates, maintenance of the teaching and working environment of the associated space and facilities, and the maintenance of the chemical inventory. This position is the topic-specialist instructor of record for the upper (200/300/400) level stand-alone credit lab courses plus the primary instructor for the lab/tutorial component in 200-level topic courses. As such, the SLI will collaborate with topic-specialist Faculty instructors in curriculum development.

The SLI is responsible for safety training, supervision and training of Laboratory Assistants (LAs) and TAs, and the direct or indirect (through TAs) teaching of the undergraduate students in a laboratory or tutorial setting. The SLI ensures maintenance of facilities, instrumentation and chemical inventory within their area of responsibility. Records management of student information, and communication with all members of the Department is a key component of the job.

Job Requirements

This position requires MSc in Chemistry in a synthetic sub-discipline with a minimum of 3 years work experience in a scientific environment. Teaching experience is also required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

In addition, this position requires:

  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, demonstrating diplomacy, integrity and tact in all interactions.
  • A variety of computer skills related to the sub-discipline.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and with all levels of university personnel.

Assets or Preferences:

  • A PhD in Chemistry
  • Experience working in a university environment.
  • Experience with laboratory-based education development.
