Daniel Gregoire Hired by Carleton University

Congratulations to Daniel Gregoire, who has been hired as an assistant professor at Carleton University. He have over 12 years of experience conducting research in the academic, private, and public sectors. His research has focussed on answering fundamental questions about how microorganisms interact with contaminants in the environment and how we can use microbes as part of innovative bioremediation strategies. His Ph.D. with Dr. Alexandre Poulain outlined novel microbe-mediated redox cycling pathways that controlled the fate of mercury in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. These discoveries laid the foundation for a startup company, Microbright, which developed bioremediation processes to remove metals from mining effluent. Following his Ph.D., he worked as a Mitacs Science Policy Fellow advancing federal policies to support open science at the International Development Research Centre. His current work as a Banting Postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Laura Hug leverages whole-community approaches such as metagenomics and enrichment culturing to characterize microbial contaminant cycling pathways in mines and landfills. His previous work in contaminated habitats forms the backbone of the research he will carry out at Carleton exploring how we can use microbes to reclaim metals from Earth’s fastest growing waste stream, e-waste.”
